You're right! we should have used the phrase "whole foods, plant-based" instead of the word "vegan". You can eat twizzlers all day long and they're vegan but not healthy. We've updated the article to be more accurate. The key to prevent cognitive decline (and the science is still unsure of the actual connection diet plays in this) is to eat whole foods, plant-based foods as much as possible and staying away from saturated fats, high sugars and processed foods. You've probably been to a few Adventist potlucks in your day and while meat-free, they certainly were not low in saturated fats and sugars so I don't think most Adventists are good examples of the kind of diet we are talking about here. Wham, Big Franks and haystacks are not going to help prevent cognitive decline LOL.

lol....I had to laugh when I read this. I have worked on nursing homes in predominantly Adventist communities. I have taken care of Alzheimers patients who were raised with never any meat or meat products ever crossed their lips. they were vegan THEIR WHOLE LIVES and still came down with Alzheimers. I have also taken care of the same type of people who have come down with various types of cancer (for those of you who believe it is diet based). So I am truly skeptical of people who claim that if you eat this type of food you will prevent this from happening. I do realize that Adventists have a health message, that we do not promote it like we should, and that we need to better promoting the health benefits of vegetarisim and vegans. It might work, but remember, you also need tp promote FRESH food, which is ,for the most part, not grocery store purchased but home grown and home preserved to carry you through the lean months. Most "fresh food" in the stores are picked green so it can be shipped without damage/spoilage.
