You're right Julie, chronic depression is much more than sadness, and is often influenced by genetics and other biological factors that set people up for the kind of lack of interest in life that you describe. As I said, "While grief and sadness are normal, and may be helpful in building character, depression is not—and expert help should be sought." -Jennifer

I disagree with the author completely. Circumstantial depression may be "characterized by prolonged rumination over an event or loss", chronic depression has absolutely nothing to do with " feeling sad" as the author suggests. Chronic depression is not dependent on circumstances. Some of us have an inherited tendency (from mother, father or other ancestor) toward serious mental health problems. I don't "feel sad". I have a general lack of interest in life .... all the time. It doesn't mean I want to end my life, often a depressed person doesn't care enough to really think about that. It's way way more than a "feeling". Without serious deliberate steps to combat chronic depression, especially for someone who does not want to be medicated, it is like swimming in quicksand. It has absolutely nothing to do with feelings.
